If you are dating often and you seem to be striking out or if you are recently single and you are about to start dating again, there are a few dating tips that you should know. If you follow these tips and you and your date are compatible, there is a very good chance that you will get a second date.
Tip #1: Be Engaging
If you want your date to be a success, you need to be engaging. If you are sitting at the table staring down at the menu or looking around the room, it can make things feel awkward and weird. If you are on your phone the whole time to check text messages or your social media feed, your date will feel like you aren’t interested. The key to a perfect date is to talk while making eye contact. Anything less will make your date want the evening to be over before it even starts.
Tip #2 Don’t Talk About Your Ex
Chances are, you have a tragic story about a past relationship. Your ex may have cheated on you or stole your life savings. If this is the case, you don’t want to talk about it on your date. If you spend the evening talking about your ex, even if you are talking about what a terrible person they were, there is a good chance that you won’t get a second date. A first date is supposed to be fun and light. Stories about your ex are best left for later in the relationship.
#3 Keep the Conversation Light
There are a few topics that you want to avoid on a first date. Politics, religion, and your views on abortion are all conversation topics that can ruin a first date if you don’t share the same views. Also, you don’t want your date to feel like an interview. If you keep firing questions at your date, it can make them feel uncomfortable. It is best to keep the conversation light and fun. There is nothing wrong with asking a few questions to get to know your date, however, if you start grilling them, they will likely lose interest quickly. You can get into the deep topics at another time.
#4 Don’t Get Drunk
There is nothing wrong with having a drink or two on your date. In most cases, a couple of drinks will help you to relax and keep things fun. However, you don’t want to go overboard. There is nothing worse than a sloppy drunk. If you have too much to drink you will start slurring your speech, stumbling when you walk and getting loud or overly emotional. Worst of all, your date might believe that you have a drinking problem. Most people don’t want to go on a second date with a drunk.
#5 Don’t Expect Too Much
The last thing that you want to do is expect too much from the first date. If you are spending the whole date mentally checking off everything on your perfect spouse wish list, you won’t be mentally present during the date. You should never go on a first date expecting this to be the person that you are going to marry and planning your wedding. It is best to see where things go and take it from there. If you expect too much from the date, you are likely going to be disappointed.
It is not uncommon for a relationship to end after the first date. In many cases, it is just because the chemistry was not there. If you follow the tips listed above, you have a good chance of getting a second date. If you don’t get that second date, it won’t be due to your behavior on the date.
